Ever wondered what a week looks like for someone who spends more time in a cherry picker basket than on solid ground?
Spoiler, it’s a mix of chimneys, pigeons, the occasional trailer mishap, and somehow still squeezing in a trip to the funfair.
Here’s my latest week in the life of Dan the Cherry Picker Man, doing what I do best — keeping Nottingham’s chimneys, roofs, and gutters in check.
Monday – Chimney TLC in Gedling
The week kicked off with a chimney in Gedling that had given up on life. The flaunching was crumbling, the brickwork was on its last legs, and the mortar joints looked like they’d been chewed by a goat.
So, out came the grinder, trowels, and buckets. Off came the loose flaunching, down came the top brick courses, and after a good clean-up and rebuild, I left behind a watertight, solid, neatly pointed chimney topped with a new cowl.
👉 This is the kind of chimney repair in Nottingham that keeps homes safe, dry, and looking smart.
Tuesday – Survey Day
Tuesday was a clipboard-and-camera kind of day:
- Met with a roofer in West Bridgford to help with access.
- Shoaib in Arnold called for a chimney reduction quote.
- Melanie in Oxton asked about solar panel pigeon proofing (a popular request these days thanks to our feathered friends).
- Granger & Oaks property managers wanted me to inspect a porch roof in Sherwood.
Sometimes the job isn’t about fixing things straight away, it’s about spotting the problems, pricing them up, and making a plan.
Wednesday – Chimney Double-Act in Daybrook
Over in Daybrook, I had a chimney double-act (well, triple if you count the valley):
- Front chimney: reflaunch, repoint, fit new caps.
- Rear chimney: same again, plus removing an old TV aerial that had been clinging on for dear life.
- Rear valley: replaced a missing slate and checked the surrounding ones.
By the end, the house had two watertight chimneys and no risky aerial dangling overhead. Not bad for a day’s work.

Thursday – Fascias, Rainwater & a Pigeon Emergency
Thursday morning started in Lenton, replacing missing fascia vents at Sandpiper Way. A straightforward job, but essential for ventilation and preventing rot.
Then it was onto Clifton, applying a rainwater barrier and making sure a canopy was draining properly instead of doubling up as a bird bath.
Just as I thought I was finished, my phone rang. Nottingham High School had a pigeon problem. Cue me dashing back to the chicken shed, loading up all my bird-mesh gear, and heading out to deal with the feathered invasion.

Friday – Roofs, Repairs & a Spider Pit Stop
Friday started in Derby, where I filled in a missing bit of lead and hopefully stopped a roof leak for good.
Next stop, Basford, where I uncovered damp behind some leadwork and a blocked outlet. A quick fix, and it was job done.
In the afternoon, I dropped the Spider (my cherry picker, not the eight-legged type) at Promax for repairs. Had a good chinwag with Mark, discovered a social influencer called Mr. Mewp (apparently there’s more than one cherry picker nerd out there), and talked to Sean about test-driving the brand-new 2095 Spider lift.
On the way home, I rang a friend at Trent College Long Eaton with a cheeky idea to test it there and he said yes. So watch this space, there might be a new machine in my yard before long.
Rounded the day off by dropping the trailer for tyre and brake repairs at HTV Vehicle Solutions in Southwell and sorting out the Hilux.
The Grand Finale – Candyfloss & High-Vis
Of course, work isn’t everything. I still managed to take Robin (my 7 year old daughter) to the funfair. If you’ve never tried juggling candyfloss while wearing a high-vis jacket, I don’t recommend it, unless you like sticky sleeves.
