Searching for a Spider Lift Replacement at Vertikal Days

After more than eight years of loyal service, my trusty Spider 1890 Pro is coming to the end of its working life. It’s been a compact, powerful, and versatile partner for countless jobs, but the time has come to look for a replacement.

And where better to start the search than Vertikal Days at Newark Showground? If there’s a spider lift or cherry picker out there that can fill the 1890’s shoes (or tracks), it’s going to be here.

What I Love About the 1890 Pro

Before diving into the new machines, it’s worth reflecting on why the 1890 Pro has been so important to my business. These are the features that set the benchmark for any replacement:

  • Compact design: It can squeeze through gaps as narrow as 800mm, giving me flexibility on tight job sites.
  • Reach: With a 17.5m working height and great outreach, it covers 80% of the jobs I take on.
  • Transport weight: Machine plus trailer comes in under 3.5 tonnes, so I can haul it with my truck and trailer.
  • Maneuverability: Despite its size, it’s incredibly capable and goes almost anywhere.
  • Dual power source: Fast and powerful on diesel, but also flexible with electric motors for indoor work.

These non-negotiables are what I’ll need in any new machine, but of course, there are a few extras on my wishlist too.

Building My Dream Machine

When you start thinking about upgrades, it’s hard not to get carried away. Here are the features that would make my dream cherry picker:

  • A bit more height and outreach (without losing maneuverability).
  • Adjustable outriggers for working in narrow spaces or roadside jobs.
  • The ability to set up directly from the trailer.
  • And for no other reason than style flashing beacons on the outriggers and a blue paint job.
  • Oh, and let’s not forget a cup holder, practical essentials, right?

With that wishlist in mind, Vertikal Days offered the perfect chance to see what’s out there.

Exploring the Options at Vertikal Days

The showground was packed with spider lifts, cherry pickers, and cranes from every major manufacturer. I spoke to six different companies, each keen to showcase their machines and explain what makes them stand out.

While I’ll be doing full breakdowns of each in future videos, a couple of machines really caught my eye on the day:

  • A CMC spider lift that ticked a lot of boxes.
  • A green Leguan lift from Finland that impressed me with its design and features.

Both are serious contenders as I look for the 1890’s successor.

Wrapping Up

By the end of the day, I was completely “cherry-pickered out” and ready for a strong coffee. But the trip was well worth it, giving me plenty to think about as I plan the next step for my business.

Have you used any of the machines I mentioned? Or do you have a recommendation for a Spider 1890 Pro replacement? Drop your thoughts in the comments I’d love to hear them.
