Six Jobs, Two Surveys and a Freebie:

A Full Day of Roofing, Repairs and Cherry Picker Grafting

After a week disrupted by high winds, Friday arrived with a vengeance for Danny, also known as Dan the Cherrypicker Man. With six postponed jobs to catch up on and a couple of extras thrown into the mix, it was always going to be a full-on day across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

From emergency leak investigations to downpipe replacements and chimney surveys, this one had a bit of everything. If you want to see the action as it happened, Watch the full video

Job 1 – Roof Leak Investigation at Home (and a Mossy Surprise)

The day kicked off at the one place Danny couldn’t say no to, his mum’s house. A mysterious roof leak had appeared, and like any roofer-son combination, he got straight up there to take a look.

The valley was full of moss, and once it was scraped back, the real issue showed itself. The overlap of the tiles was poor, moisture was trapped underneath, and during heavy rain, water had likely bottlenecked and got up under the felt. Danny cleared the moss, sealed gaps with roof putty and suggested a proper long-term solution: a full moss removal and biocide treatment to prevent regrowth and stop future leaks.

Job 2 – Chimney Repointing After a Recent Liner Install

Next stop: Lowdham Grange. Danny had installed a chimney liner earlier in the week, and the brickwork around the top course needed attention. Using the cherry picker, he repointed the damaged mortar to make it safe and watertight.

Quick job, but important, failing pointing around a pot can lead to damp, instability and further cracking over time.

Job 3 – Bird Spike Repairs on a High Commercial Wall

From residential roofs to height safety work, Danny then headed to a job on the Nottinghamshire–Derbyshire border. A regular client had bird spikes falling from a high ledge over a public walkway never a good combo.

The old adhesive had deteriorated, the brickwork was grubby, and the spikes had come loose. Danny removed the damaged sections and reinstated them safely to prevent any future hazards.

Job 4 – Downpipe Replacement and Leadwork Sealing in Kirkby-in-Ashfield

After a quick trip to Jewsons for materials (and a shock at the price of downpipes), Danny went to The Bentinck in Kirkby-in-Ashfield to tackle a stubborn cast iron pipe and some suspect leadwork.

The old pipe was full of rust, cracked at the back and had been failing for years, water was going straight down the wall. Danny replaced the downpipe sections and sealed loose lead on the gable end, preventing future damp issues and making the building watertight again.

Job 5 – Two Roof Surveys: Mansfield and Edwinstowe

Once the cherry picker work was wrapped up, Danny moved on to roof surveys.

The first was in Mansfield, where the customer had seen his Flexim roof putty video and wanted advice. Danny recommended repointing hip and ridge tiles along with a full chimney flaunch repair.

With daylight to spare, he drove to Edwinstowe for another chimney survey, taking notes for the report and future repair work.

Job 6 – A Slipped Slate Repair to Finish the Day

To round off the day, Danny headed back to his own village to repair a slipped slate for a friend. The roof was in rough condition, “absolutely knackered,” in his own words but he secured the tile, added fixings and made it safe for the time being.

After that, it was job done, vans away, and feet up.
